The Perspective of Medical Students on Clinical Rounds: A Qualitative Study

Background & aim: Education in medical sciences is a combination of knowledge and art that requires practice in realistic environments. Learning in the clinical environment is recognized as an essential component of the educational program of medical students. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the views of medical students regarding the status of clinical rounds at Yasuj University of Medical Sciences.
Methods: The present qualitative study, based on conventional content analysis, was conducted among medical students (9 interns and 7 residents) at Yasuj University of Medical Sciences in 2023. Participants were selected through purposive sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected using semi-structured individual interviews. The analysis was performed following the framework of Graneheim and Lundman. The credibility and trustworthiness of the data were ensured using Guba and Lincoln's criteria. Data analysis was conducted using MAXQDA 10 software.
Results: Two main categories including strengths of clinical rounds and challenges of clinical rounds and five subcategories namely effective educational processes, the use of clinical teaching methods, training of essential skills, challenges related to the faculty members and students were identified.
Conclusion: The results indicated two key areas in clinical rounds. On one hand, strengths include effective teaching methods and essential skills that enhance the quality of clinical education. On the other hand, challenges arise from issues related to faculty and student interactions. Addressing these aspects could lead to improvements in the clinical education experience and the enhancement of clinical skills.
