Abstract:
Background & aim: Over the past few decades, air pollution, especially PM10 particulate matter, has significantly affected the health of individuals, notably in Ahvaz, where it is visibly the most significant environmental issue and air pollutant. On the other hand, Remote Sensing (RS) has been introduced by researchers as a suitable tool for air pollution monitoring in recent decades. Therefore, this study aimed toevaluate the seasonal variation of PM10 in the year 2022 in Ahvaz city.
Methods:In this study, considering the essential nature of dust particles and their widespread dispersion, the relationship between AOD data from the MODIS sensor and PM10 from the environmental department station in Ahvaz city was prepared for one year to assess the correlation between these two parameters. The correlation between AOD and hourly (12, 13, 14, 15) and daily variations of PM10 was examined. Results: The results showed a significant correlation coefficient between the datasets, indicating a high correlation between AOD and PM10 in the designated area. The highest correlation coefficient was observed at 15:00 with 0.86. PM10 particulate matter in the air, due to the phenomenon of dust and soil, intensifies in the warm season and the highest correlation was mainly observed in the warm season (spring and summer). Additionally, the correlation coefficient reached its lowest point in the cold season, which includes autumn and winter. Finally, it should be noted that remote sensing is an important technology in air pollution monitoring. Conclusion:This study investigated different time intervals, each showing a different level of correlation. Daily correlation and different hours 12, 13, 14, 15 showed correlation coefficients of 0.41, 0.75, 0.72, 0.78, and 0.86, respectively, with the highest correlation observed at 15:00.
