Evaluation of Monte Carlo simulation accuracy for calculating the PDD of low energy X-ray in femoral bone marrow

Introduction: Due to the hazards of ionized radiation on bone marrow as well as the large number of radiography of bone, it is important to evaluate the absorbed dose in the bone marrow during radiography procedures. In this study, it is tried to evaluate the absorbed dose in bone marrow during femoral radiography with one of the most accurate dosimetry methods. Methods: 100 CT images of the femur were selected, of which 28 images were extracted from the beginning to the end of the femur. After simulating the head of the device with the usual energies in femoral radiography, the information obtained from CT images was used to construct a digital femoral phantom. The phantom was digitally irradiated with X-rays and the percentage of absorbed dose (PDD) was calculated using STATE DOSE software. Results: The percentage of absorbed dose in the femoral bone marrow at energies of 70, 80 and 90 was in the range of 2 to 78%, 5 to 79% and 5 to 76%, respectively. Discussion and Conclusion: Comparing the results with previous studies showed that PDDs obtained from the surface to a depth of 2 cm for energy of 90 kV are the most accurate. As the depth increases and the energy decreases, the accuracy of the results decreases.
