Abstract Background & aim: Magnesium injection delays postoperative pain and hospital discharge. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of magnesium-sulfate infusion on postoperative pain in patients undergoing inguinal hernia surgery under general anesthesia. Methods: In the present clinical-trial study, 30 patients undergoing surgery Hernia Unilateral were randomly divided into two equal groups of treatment (infusion of magnesium sulfate 40 mg/kg and then 15 mg /kg/ hr during surgery and for 20 minutes afterwards and control (infusion of isotonic normal saline at the same condition). After surgery, postoperative pain was assessed using visual analogue scale (VAS) at 30 min, 2 h, 6, 12 and 24 after cessation of the infusion. The amount of analgesic consumption, vital signs and adverse events were investigated. Data were analyzed by chi-square and ANOVA. Results: VAS scores at 30 minutes, 2 hours, 6, 12 and 24 hrs postoperative and meperidine consumption in the magnesium sulfate group were significantly lower than the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: Magnesium sulfate can successfully reduce the postoperative pain and narcotic consumption after surgery without any side effects after surgery.
