Background and Objective: Overweight and obesity are multifactorial phenomena that can endanger individuals’ health by causing inflammatory disorders. On the other hand, physical activity, given its favorable effects on the body, can prevent the progression of obesity. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of 8 weeks of functional training and grapefruit juice consumption on liver enzymes in overweight women.
Materials and Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, 40 overweight women from Bushehr city aged 25 to 32 years (BMI > 25) were selected as the statistical sample and were randomly assigned to four groups: functional training/placebo, grapefruit supplement, functional training/grapefruit supplement, and control. Participants performed functional training for 8 weeks, 3 sessions per week, consisting of 8 exercises targeting the upper, core, and lower limbs. Participants in the grapefruit-consuming group received 5 mL of grapefruit juice per kilogram of body weight 30 minutes before exercise for 8 weeks, three sessions per week. Data were analyzed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), the Bonferroni post hoc test, and the paired t-test.
Results: The findings showed that 8 weeks of functional training and grapefruit juice consumption led to a significant reduction in serum ALT, AST, and GGT levels in the experimental groups compared with the control group (p < 0.05). In addition, the greatest improvement in liver injury indices was observed in the “training + grapefruit juice” group, indicating an interactive and synergistic effect of these two interventions (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: It appears that the combination of functional training and grapefruit juice consumption has greater protective effects on the liver of overweight women. Therefore, the simultaneous use of physical activity and this natural supplement can be proposed as an effective non-pharmacological strategy to improve liver health in overweight individuals.
