Background & aim: The problem of marital infidelity has become a common occurrence in today's societies, and the use of effective interventions to control these disturbances is essential. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of emotion-focused therapy on emotional self-regulation and marital burnout in women affected by marital infidelity.

Methods: The present research was a quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test study with an intervention group and a control group. The statistical population of the study were women referred to the counseling center due to their husbands' infidelity in the time period of 2022. Through purposive sampling, 30 participants who had obtained higher scores on the marital burnout questionnaire and difficulty in emotional regulation were selected and randomly assigned to 15 in the intervention group and 15 in the control group. The intervention group underwent emotion-focused therapy for 9 sessions, and the control group did not receive any intervention.

Results: The results of multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) indicated that emotion-focused therapy (EFT) had a positive and significant effect on reducing difficulty in emotion regulation in the experimental group compared to the control group (p<0.001). Also, emotion-focused therapy (EFT) had a positive and significant effect on reducing marital burnout in the experimental group compared to the control group (p<0.001).

Conclusion: The use of interventions based on emotion-focused therapy can lead to increased emotional self-regulation and reduced marital burnout in women affected by marital infidelity.
