Comparison of antibiotic resistance and the frequency of virulence genes between urine and fecal E.coli strains isolated from patients with UTI

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one the most common infections in humans and Escherichia coli is one of the major causes of this infection. The present study was performed in order to compare the frequency of virulence genes and antibiotic susceptibility pattern of urine and fecal E.coli isolates of patients with UTI. The urine and fecal E.coli isolates of 30 women with UTI were collected. The frequency of hlyD and cnf1 virulence genes was evaluated by PCR and the antibiotic susceptibilities of the isolates were determined by disk diffusion method. The obtained results showed that the virulence genes were significantly more prevalent among urine isolates (p< 0.05). The urine isolates showed the highest level of antibiotic resistance against trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (51.1%) whereas the fecal isolates showed the highest level of resistance (38.9%) against gentamicin. The urine isolates showed higher susceptibility against ciprofloxacin (32.2%). Among urine and fecal isolates 37.7% and 46.6% were respectively resistant to more than two antibiotics. This study suggested ciprofloxacin as choice drugs for E.coli derived UTI treatment. Based on the results of the present study, antibiotic resistance has increased and it seems necessary to research on developing new therapies for this infection.
