The effectiveness of reality therapy to decrease the marital conflict and despair in women with Multiple Sclerosis

Background & aim: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the diseases of nervous system that is accompanied with destruction of neuron ways corded sheath. The weakening nature of this disease affects all aspects of patient’s life and decreases their life expectancy. This consequence plays a considerable role in the creation of marital conflict in the lives of these. In this regard, this study aims to determine the effectiveness of reality therapy to decrease the marital conflict and hopelessness in women with Multiple Sclerosis. Method: This research was of a semi-experimental with pre-test and post-test experimental and control groups. The study population included all the females with Multiple Sclerosis referring to the MS Society and Sina specialized hospital of Tehran in 1394. By applying the cluster sampling, 31 patients who suffered marital conflict and also had other criteria for the study were selected and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The experimental group received 10 sessions of 2 hours of reality therapy training. Sanee Marital conflict questionnaire and Beck Hopelessness scale were used to collect the data. Data were analyzed using SPSS software (ver. 18) and multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA). Results: Results of MANCOVA indicated that the reality therapy training directed to a statistically significant difference between pre-and post-test scores which led to decreasing scores of the marital conflict and hopelessness. So that in the Post-stage, after controlling for pre-test scores, the experimental group reported less the marital conflict and hopelessness compared to the control group. Conclusion: The reality therapy within a group for Multiple Sclerosis patients makes their needs known and encourages them to talk to their husbands about it, therefore it may play an important role in resolving the marital conflicts as well as in reducing their despair.
