The cytotoxic effects of Magnesium oxide nanoparticles on K562 cell line

Background: Cancer is a complex genetic disease which basically caused by environmental factors. Nowadays, nanometrials with various techniques used in all human daily applications such as medicine, pharmaceutical, drug and cancer therapy. MgO-NP is an important inorganic oxide. The aim of this study is investigation of K562 cell line growth inhibition by MgONP. The effect of magnesium oxide nanoparticles has not been studied on these types of cancer cells.
Materials and Methods: K562 cells were cultured in RPMI medium containing 10% FBS supplemented with 0, 25, 50,100 and 200 mg/l of MgO-NP for 24 hours. The toxicity was evaluated using MTT assay and acridine orange and propidium iodide double staining.
Results: MgO NPs had no effects on cell viability of K562 cancer cells and peripheral blood mononuclear cell (normal cells) in MTT assay. The MgO NPs did not induce apoptosis which was confirmed through acridine orange and propidium iodide double staining.
Conclusion: The MgO-NP did not exert any impact on viability of K562 cells under our experimental conditions. This observation indicates that MgO-NPs may have no anti cancerous effect on K562 cell line.
