Background & aim:A suicide attempt involves overt and identifiable actions performed with the intent to cause self-harm or death. In psychological assessment, validity ensures an instrument measures its intended construct, while reliability concerns the consistency and stability of those measurements. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties—specifically the validity and reliability—of the Couple Relationship Questionnaire (CRQ) among married women who had survived a suicide attempt.
Methods: This cross-sectional methodological study was conducted among 200 married women in Boyer-Ahmad County who had a history of unsuccessful suicide attempts, selected via purposive sampling. To assess validity, Content, Face, Construct, Convergent, and Discriminant validity were evaluated, alongside Cross-Validated Communality and Redundancy indices. Reliability was examined using Cronbach’s alpha, the item-loop method, and Composite Reliability (CR). Data were analyzed using SPSS and SmartPLS software. Statistical procedures included correlation analysis, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), item discrimination analysis, and Partial Least Squares (PLS) path modeling.
Results: Convergent validity was confirmed at both the construct level (Average Variance Extracted; AVE > 0.50) and the item level (factor loadings > 0.40), indicating high accuracy in measuring the target variables. Factor loading analysis revealed that "husband's violence against the wife" (loading = 0.957) was the most influential component in assessing the marital relationships of this population. Within this component, "verbal violence" showed a higher impact compared to emotional and physical dimensions. Discriminant validity was established according to the Fornell-Larcker criterion, as the square root of the AVE for each construct exceeded its maximum correlation with other constructs. Composite Reliability (CR > 0.70) and Cronbach’s alpha confirmed high internal consistency. Finally, Cross-Validated Redundancy and Communality indices (Q² > 0.35) demonstrated that the measurement model possessed strong predictive power and overall quality.
Conclusion: Based on the robust validity and reliability indices, the Couple Relationship Questionnaire is a psychometrically sound and appropriate instrument for assessing marital dynamics. The tool demonstrates satisfactory quality and can be effectively utilized by clinicians and researchers to evaluate the couple relationships of married women who have experienced suicide attempts.
