Assessment of the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in nurses

Abstract:

Background and aim: Nursing staff are always at risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders which is the most important health problems among nurses. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in nursing personnel.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2014. In this study, 200 nurses in teaching hospitals in Shiraz were selected by random cluster sampling.  The Nordic questionnaire was used for data collection. The data was analyzed using t tests and chi-square tests.

Results: Results showed that 100 percent of the study population in the last 12 months, at least one organ of ​​the body's involved in musculoskeletal disorders. Most problems were related to the back (12.7), knees (12.6) and lower back (12.4). Significant relationship was observed between sex and the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders of the neck. Moreover, a significant association was seen between age and prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in the leg.

Conclusions: Nurses have a high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders and risk factors associated with the job is complex.
