Anemia is one of the most common public health problems and has important individual and social consequences. On the other hand, kidney stones are considered as one of the common urological diseases and some evidence points to its possible relationship with blood status. However, the evidence in the Iranian population is limited and contradictory.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 9121 adult participants in Fasa city health centers. Demographic data, medical history and laboratory indicators were extracted. Hemoglobin level was investigated as the dependent variable and the presence of kidney stones as the independent variable. Data analysis was performed with appropriate statistical tests and a significance level of 0.05. The results were reported as Odds Ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI95%) and P-value.
Results: No statistically significant association was observed between kidney stones, other chronic diseases, and non-stone urological diseases with hemoglobin levels (for kidney stones: OR=1.13; CI95%: 0.91–1.39; P=0.19). However, WBC and RDW indices in patients with kidney stones had the closest association to the significant level (OR≈1.10; CI95%: 0.95–1.28; P=0.12 and OR=1.15; CI95%: 0.98–1.34; P=0.09, respectively).
Conclusion: The present study did not show a significant association between kidney stones and anemia, but the observed trends may indicate the possible role of inflammatory and renal processes in changes in hemoglobin levels. Prospective studies with a larger sample size and examining confounding variables such as nutritional status, inflammatory markers, and medication use are recommended.
