Abstract:   (40 Views)
Background & aim: Hypertension is one of the most common chronic diseases, significantly impacting patients' physical and mental health and affecting their quality of life. Therefore, the primary aim of this study was to assess the quality of life and illness acceptance among hypertensive patients attending Alavi Hospital and to identify factors influencing these variables to inform clinical and psychological care improvements.
Methods:  This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 253 hypertensive patients attending Alavi Hospital. Convenience sampling was employed, and data were collected using validated standard questionnaires: the WHOQOL-26 for quality of life and the Acceptance of Illness Scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26. After assessing normality, appropriate parametric and non-parametric tests were applied. Relationships between variables were examined via Spearman’s correlation, and predictors of quality of life were identified using simple and multiple linear regression models incorporating demographic and clinical variables.
Results: The mean quality of life score was 58.80, and the mean illness acceptance score was 28.54. A strong positive correlation was observed between quality of life and illness acceptance (ρ = 0.928, p < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis indicated that illness acceptance, age, and marital status were significant predictors of quality of life. The final regression model explained 91.5% of the variance in quality of life (R² = 0.915). Variables such as health insurance status, supplementary insurance, family history, smoking, and BMI were not statistically significant.
Conclusion: Illness acceptance plays a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life among hypertensive patients. Addressing this psychological component alongside clinical interventions can improve patients’ mental, social, and functional status. Strengthening illness acceptance should be prioritized as a key objective in care and educational programs aimed at improving the quality of life in this population.
