The Combined Effect of Benson’s Relaxation Technique and Foot Bath on Anxiety in Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome

Introduction and Objective: Coronary artery diseases cause several problems, including pain, decreased tissue oxygenation, and reduced tolerance in daily activities, which can lead to anxiety and decreased quality of life in affected individuals. A combined therapy of relaxation and warm foot bath has been proposed to reduce anxiety in these patients. Given the short hospitalization period of acute coronary syndrome patients in the cardiac intensive care unit and the high incidence of anxiety in these patients, it is the nursing community’s responsibility to provide the best method to reduce the complications of the disease and hospitalization. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of the combined Benson’s relaxation technique and warm foot bath on anxiety in patients with acute coronary syndrome.
Materials and Methods: This study is a controlled clinical trial conducted during the winter of 2018 and spring of 2019 on 64 patients with acute coronary syndrome hospitalized in the CCU of Shahid Rajaei Hospital in Gachsaran. Patients were selected using convenience sampling and were divided into three intervention groups and one control group using block randomization. The control and intervention groups received the same pharmacotherapy program, but the intervention groups received relaxation alone, warm foot bath alone, or a combination of both, depending on their group assignment. The Beck Anxiety Inventory was used as the data collection tool in this study. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software version 19 and statistical tests such as Chi-square, repeated measures analysis of variance, and Friedman test. The significance level for the data was considered P < 0.05.
Findings: At the beginning of the study, there was no statistically significant difference between the intervention and control groups in terms of demographic characteristics and anxiety levels (P > 0.05). After performing Benson’s relaxation, foot bath, and their combination, the results showed that the anxiety levels in the intervention groups were significantly lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05), but no statistically significant difference was observed between the three intervention groups (P > 0.05).
Conclusion: Benson’s relaxation techniques, foot bath, and their combination, similar to previous studies, reduced the anxiety levels of patients, and there was no significant difference between the three methods.
