Abstract
Background & aim: The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is considered one of the most common sports injuries. Physical fatigue in the lower limbs can affect the movement pattern of this part of the body and increase the risk factors for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of fatigue on the risk factors for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in young individuals with neuromuscular weakness.
Methods: Sixteen inactive young boys with neuromuscular weakness were purposefully and conveniently selected to participate as the sample in this study. The participants performed a pre-test that included kinematic and kinetic components, performance factors, proprioception, and muscle strength through single-leg squat and drop jump tests, as well as motion capture and force plate systems. After the fatigue protocol was completed, a post-test was conducted. Data collected were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test to check for normality and the paired t-test was used to compare the means of the pre-test and post-test in the dependent variables at a significance level of (p ≤ 0.05).
Results: The results indicated that local fatigue had a significant difference on the knee kinematic components during the single-leg squat task, as well as on the functional components (jump height, reactive strength index, time to stabilize, and total jump time) during the single-leg drop jump task, and on hamstring muscle strength. However, no significant difference was found in the kinematic and kinetic components of the single-leg drop jump task or in the rate of force development of the hamstring muscle.
Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study, it seems that local fatigue can affect the performance of inactive boys with neuromuscular weakness and lead to a decrease in their performance, particularly in the knee kinematic components during the single-leg squat task, as well as in the functional components (jump height, reactive strength index, time to stabilize, and total jump time) during the single-leg drop jump task, and in hamstring muscle strength.
