Introduction: Due to the importance of analgesia in inpatients and after inguinal hernia surgery, the present study was designed to investigate the effect of preoperative portal injection on opioid consumption after inguinal herniorrhaphy.
Materials and Methods: In a single-blind cross-sectional clinical trial, 100 patients with inguinal hernia were randomly divided into two groups: Apotel and placebo. The case group received 15 mg per kg bodyweight of Apotel, and the control group received a placebo half an hour before the operation. The number of narcotics consumed during the operation was recorded during the next 24 hours and for the duration of the request for the first post-operative housing. The visual pain scale criterion was used to determine the pain score of patients after surgery.
Results: The mean age was 32/7±00/46 years in the control group and 10/7±52/45  years in the case group. The amount of pain and need for opioids at 1, 2, and 4 hours after surgery in the target group was significantly lower (p <0.001). At 8, 12, and 24 hours, there was no significant difference in pain between the two groups (p = 0.48), but the need for an opioid in the target group was significantly lower (P <0.001).
Conclusion: Apotel is effective as a prodrug in reducing opioid use and increasing the duration of pain relief after surgery.
