Histomorphometric changes of the ovary in letrozole-induced polycystic ovary syndrome after evening primrose administration

Background and Aim: polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a very prevalent and complex hormonal imbalance that affects almost 5 to 10% of women. In the current study, the impact of evening primrose oil (EPO) on folliculogenesis in rats with PCOS was determined.
Methods: Thirty tow rats were separated into four groups (n=8). Group 1: for twenty-eight days, EPO was injected intraperitoneally (i.p) with the dose of 500 mg/kg. Group 2: PCOS was caused by the oral administration of letrozole at a dose of 1 mg/kg for twenty-eight days. Group 3: PCOS was caused and for twenty-eight days, EPO was injected (i.p) with the dose of 500 mg/kg. Group 4: PCOS was caused and for twenty-eight days, EPO was injected (i.p) with the dose of 1000 mg/kg. Lastly, after fixing the ovary tissues, a serial section was performed in order to count the follicles.
Results: The histomorphometric data demonstrated that EPO with the dose of 500 mg/kg increased corpus luteum in the EPO-treated PCOS group in comparison with the PCOS group (P<0.05). EPO in both doses decreased cystic follicle in comparison with the PCOS group (P<0.05).
Conclusion: According to this current results, it can be concluded that EPO can improve the symptoms of polycystic ovarian syndrome by improving the maturation of follicles.
