Background & aim:Anterior cruciate ligament(ACL) injuries are among the most prevalent sports-related injuries. Lower limb physical fatigue can alter movement patterns, thereby increasing the risk factors for ACL injury. This study aimed to compare the effects of fatigue on ACL injury risk factors in inactive young males with neuromuscular weakness.
Methods: Sixteen inactive young males with neuromuscular weakness were selected through purposeful and convenience sampling. Participants underwent a pre-test assessment encompassing kinematic and kinetic variables, performance factors, proprioception, and muscle strength, utilizing single-leg squat and drop jump tasks. Data were captured using motion capture and force plate systems. Following the administration of a fatigue protocol, a post-test was conducted. Data normality was assessed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, and a paired t-test was employed to compare pre- and post-test means for dependent variables at a significance level of p ≤ 0.05.
Results: Significant differences were observed in maximum knee flexion (p=0.027), jump height (p=0.035), reactive strength index (p=0.000), time to stabilization (p=0.038), total jump duration (p=0.032), single-leg drop jump performance (p=0.044), and hamstring muscle strength (p=0.020). However, no significant differences were found in other kinematic and kinetic components of the single-leg drop jump or the rate of hamstring muscle force development.
Conclusion: The findings suggest that localized fatigue significantly impacts the performance of inactive males with neuromuscular weakness. This fatigue leads to performance decrements, particularly in knee kinematics during single-leg squats, functional components (jump height, reactive strength index, time to stabilization, and total jump duration) during single-leg drop jumps, and overall hamstring strength.
