Effect of Cardiac Rehabilitation with High Intensity Interval Training on Serum Levels of Galectin-3 in Patients with Heart Failure

Introduction: Cardiac rehabilitation improves functional capacity of patients with heart failure. Therefore, we are going to investigate the effects of 8 weeks high intensity interval training (HIIT) on galectin-3 serum level in cardiovascular patients with heart failure.
Methods: Twenty four cardiovascular patients with 40-50% ejection fraction were randomly recruited in exercise or control groups. Exercise protocol were performed 3 d.wk-1 for 8 wk. Each session consisted of 12 × 1.5-min bouts of pedaling on bicycle ergometer and 8 × 1.5-min of running on treadmill. 45 to 60 seconds of Active rest with 40-60% of VO2peak were done between high intensity repetitions.  Intensity of training was ∼50-60% V̇o2 peak in the first week and increased 10% each week and from 4 to 8 weeks intensity was conducted in 80-90% of VO2peak. Blood samples were collected before and 48 hours after the last training session in the same situation in both groups. Galectin-3 level and EF was evaluated. Data was analyzed by paired and independent samples T Test.
Result: The result showed that, in comparison of control group, Galectin-3 serum level was significantly decreased and EF increased in HIIT group. But in control group, in comparison of pre and posttest, galectin-3 serum levels was significantly increased and EF decreased (P < 0.05).
